The gear ratio is the number of turns of the back wheel per cycle of the chainring
This is the speed that you achieve for a given sprocket/chainring combination when pedalling at a specified rate (RPM)
The gain ratio is the number of meters the outermost point of the tyre rotates through per meter that the outermost point of the cranks (your feet) move. Think of it as how much your bike is amplifying the movement of your feet

About

This tool makes it easy to experiment with different bicycle gear configurations, whether you're an experienced bike builder or a first time bike hacker. It has been built with iteration in mind, and allows direct and simple comparison of different gear setups. If you are new to it and don't know what it does, take the walkthrough tour.

Inspiration for this came whilst using the calculator Sheldon Brown built but finding it complicated and inconvenient to use. Extra features are being added to this all the time. If we're missing something you want, let us know!
